  • Apple iMac MC511LL/A 27-Inch Desktop
    Apple Computer

My Review: Quad Core power is tough to argue with when doing any serious media work. The 27" 2560x1440px LED backlit screen makes your editing life easier. Color is accurate and balanced. Firewire 800, 4 USB 2 ports, Bluetooth and all flavors of Wifi make connecting and sharing work easy. The iMac is gorgeous to look at and a dream to work on. The wireless keyboard and mouse are comfortable and keep desk clutter minimized. The iMac really makes an ideal editing station.

  • Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.66GHz Laptop
    Apple Computer

My Review: For 2011 I'm using the Little Macbook Pro though I'm not really giving up anything from the 15" except for screen size. Of course size matters in the screen but the trade off for the smaller body of the 13" makes the difference. This machine is for field editing and communications, serious editing happens back in the office on the 27" iMac. My main criteria I have in a notebook is durability, connectivity and operability. The mini MBP shines in all categories. The aluminum unibody construction certainly makes it durable. Firewire 800, USB 2, 802.11 a/b/g/n and gigabit ethernet make it connect. Core 2 Duo processors with 8GB RAM make it fly. If size matters - the 13 shines.

Update: We just added new 13" MBP with i5 processor. Holy hell this thing screams. about 2x faster than the Core2Duo

  • G-DRIVE MINI 500GB 7200 RPM EXT
    G-TECH

My Review: These little inconspicuous drives make backing up on the road very easy. At 500GB they have enough storage for even the largest jobs and 7200RPM keeps the read/write happening fast. What's a big deal about the G-Tech drives is the multi-interface, Firewire 400/800, ESATA and USB 2.0. These drives are BUS powered so need for an external power brick. Disc drive is made by Hitachi.

  • Data Robotics Drobo 4-Bay USB 2.0/FireWire 800 SATA Storage Array DR04DD10
    Data Robotics

My Review: The Drobo makes backup simple. They use a technology they call "Beyond Raid" which allows you to use different capacity drives in the unit. Traditional raids need matched drives - Drobo does not. When I first started using Drobo for backup I had 2x 500GB, 1x750GB and 1x1TB drives. When the Drobo got to about 80% capacity I decided to increase the available space so I ejected one of the 500GB drives (while the Drobo was running mind you)  and slid in a 1TB drive. Instant capacity increase and no fuss. If you run 4 drives drobo can handle up to 2 drive failures. Nice.
